Alfred Jarry's work "Ubu Roi" mercilessly lashes out at ruthless opportunism, the blatant crime of power, and the predatory voracity of the tyrant.
It is an unorthodox work where the absurd competes with the grotesque and the improbable. Scenes follow one another like cascades of cold reality against all conventionality.
In a fictional Poland, the captain of the dragoons decides, at the urging of his wife, to overthrow the king of the country. Although the rebellion is revealed, Ubu manages to escape by slaughtering the royal family and taking over the governance of the country. In the end, however, Ubu, defeated by war, takes flight.
