From his theatrical works, his worldwide success came with Waiting for Godot in 1953, which describes two impoverished marginal figures sitting on a deserted country road, waiting for someone mysterious named Gogo who never appears.

Beckett depicts them as incapable of action and indecisive about anything. This inertia, this emptiness, constitute the "action" and the essence of the play: life is monotonous and meaningless, starting from nothing and leading nowhere.

This work is considered one of the masterpieces of Theater of the Absurd and elevated its author to a leading position among pioneers of modern theater. In 1961, Beckett received the International Publisher's Prize in Fomentor, Spain, and in 1969, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
