This novel presents the harsh and painful struggle for survival of a poor boy and his family in a mountainous village of Achaia, which, unfortunately, witnessed and experienced the events of that turbulent and bloody wartime period of the 1940s. In the turmoil into which he was inadvertently dragged, as a conscript soldier in September 1947 of a Greek Army Infantry Regiment, he paid a heavy price, being severely injured by a landmine explosion resulting in the amputation of his lower limbs.
His recorded testimony through the densely written pages of his Diary should only be questioned by a biased and malevolent reader because, according to the Gospel saying, "and he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true" (Gospel of John 14:21).
Additions and comments provide information succinctly about the weaponry, transport means, supplies, and materials used in the described operations of the period 1946-49 by the National Army and the communist insurgents. Diagrams of military operations, unit compositions, maps of the operational area, as well as photographs from that time, give the discerning reader a more complete picture of the events of the narrative.
The historical truth about what happened in our homeland over the last 70 years has yet to reveal its clear and bright face, which the division of our race keeps in darkness. The publication of the Diary may assist in the in-depth research of the historical investigator, but also in the more complete self-awareness of our race...
