Globally recognized in mathematics, the pedagogical method of Singapore
This book offers more than 100 activities of graded difficulty based on the Montessori system and the Singapore Pedagogy. The goal is for first-grade children to love mathematics.
The approach followed develops in the following stages:
1. The child uses specific objects (e.g., cards, cubes...) and gradually understands concepts such as quantity, number... (the "concrete" stage).
2. The child symbolically represents mathematical situations and numbers using shapes, drawings, etc. (the "pictorial" stage).
3. The child is introduced to the concepts of arithmetic operations.
During this process of initiation into mathematics, the child:
- Discovers new concepts and learns to express logical thinking with words: numbers (initially up to 10, 20, 99), lengths, shapes, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Consolidates learning. Reinforces strategies discovered during the "concrete" phase, symbolically represents quantities, and learns to use mathematical symbols to transition to abstract thinking.
- Learns to correctly use the supportive materials (number rulers, number cards, cubes, etc.) related to each proposed activity. With the help of the supportive materials, the child approaches and applies the stages of the "concrete" and the "pictorial".
