Description

Today, here amidst the dead ruins, I felt the greatest force of life. I felt as if a mysterious power was emerging from the soil and stones and entering my veins like a warmth; spreading throughout my body, obliterating my fears and hesitations; freeing me from the earthly.

I hear, Miltos, the groans and pleas of our ancestors, who seek vindication for their struggles and sacrifices. They want us to resist and drive away those who have desecrated their graves, so their spirits can roam freely among their living.

Yes, Miltos, I will fight, for I have now conquered life. And if it happens that I die, our children, our parents, our ancestors will welcome me into their warm embraces, for they will know that as long as I lived, I did not forget them. I have fulfilled my duty!

Like the series, the book is suspiciously pro-Venizelian. However, history has written and classified it as a betrayal. Beyond that, the writing is mediocre, with excessive and frequent use of flowers and their scents in order to "bring to life" the words, to the point where you wonder how capable the author, Mr. Tsirkinidis, really is. Nevertheless, it is important for even such mediocre efforts to be made, as they concern our history and awaken the sense of seeking the truth.

In summary, if you want to read about the Genocide of our ancestors, this is not the appropriate book. HOWEVER, I want to say something that helped me a lot. It helped me see the present differently as a young person in a homeland without light..! Seeing Miltos and Iphigenia, put yourself in their shoes for a moment...put yourself in every young person of that time. What dreams? 2 World Wars, 2 Balkan Wars, a Genocide, and a Civil War, and do you know why all of this happened? Because they had faith and courage. They succeeded, and we are the proof! We owe it to them to live with dignity!

  • I had it in my library since '20 and I recently read it. I found it very different from the series and much better. No comparison to the TV show. I cried a lot while reading it and through every detail it made me learn what these people really went through. I highly recommend it. It's worth having in every library.
