The School for Wives by Molière is one of the 14 comedies-ballets (comedies with visual dance performances) written by the leading French playwright. It was first performed on December 26, 1662, immediately winning the admiration of the audience.

The School for Wives, like its predecessor The School for Husbands (which debuted on June 24, 1661), inaugurates the great psychological comedy in French theater. Although it elicited a storm of reactions against the author from his numerous opponents, Molière in these works proves to be a profound connoisseur of female psychology and an excellent anatomist of the social conventions of his time.
