"Sergios and Vakkhos" (1959), a historical novel or better yet a novelistic chronicle, draws its premise from Byzantium, narrating the fourteen centuries of Greek life from 250 AD to 1948, sometimes seriously and other times in a whimsical manner.
Saints Sergios and Vakkhos do not live withdrawn in the bliss of Paradise; rather, from the splendid temple built in their honor by Justinian, they watch attentively the course of Hellenism as well as the whole world, discussing, commenting on, and judging it. Meanwhile, the reader delights and bursts into laughter.
This novel is unique within Karagatsis' work, not only because there is no other inspired by Byzantium - apart from the short story "Christmas of 1448 AD" - but also for another reason: the author himself wrote a brief summary with the slightly different title: "The Wonderful Story of Saints Sergios and Vakkhos".
