When the Song of Songs was written is unknown. We also do not know who wrote it. We do not yet know if we are dealing with a single poem or with several songs that gradually formed a unity.
The few things that can be said with certainty about the work are these: the Song was written in Hebrew - Aramaic language and translated, besides into Latin (Vulgate), into Hellenistic Greek: the language spoken by the people in Alexandria. The translation into Hellenistic language of all the books of the Old Testament – and of the Song, of course – was done by the Seventy (LXX), a committee of 72 Jewish Hellenists.
This translation project began during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285-246 BC) and was completed after 150 years. The LXX divided the books of the Old Testament into three categories: Historical, Prophetic, and Poetic. The Song belongs to the third category.
Around 90 BC, an assembly of rabbis in Jabneh, Palestine, established the Canon of the books of the Old Testament. The Song of Songs was included in the Canon and earned a place among the group of books titled Holy Scriptures.
