The economics of education is a relatively new branch of economic science. This book provides an introduction to the subject, covering the broader area of human capital.
The emphasis is on Anglo-Saxon literature, as it was initially articulated at the University of Chicago, which has awarded many Nobel prizes to its pioneers, and as it has evolved up to the present day. Topics include the efficiency of investments in education, measuring the quality of education, the contribution of education to economic development, education planning, its evaluation, the education-unemployment relationship, income distribution, the cost and financing of education, and the role of the state in educational policy.
The book uses empirical examples from around the world, and of course from Greece. One conclusion of the book is that no educational reform has the chance to succeed in our country if it does not adhere to some basic principles of economic education.
