Description

What day did the shortest war in History break out and end (in about forty minutes)? How did a herd of rabbits defeat Napoleon in 1807? Why did the British go to sleep on September 2, 1752, and wake up on the 14th? How did a women's march in 1917 ignite the Russian Revolution?

From the day Jeanne de Clisson became a pirate and declared war against the King of France (August 2, 1343) to the day Lennon and McCartney met (July 6, 1957), History is filled with incredible heroes and fascinating turning points.

Through the pages of this book, Dan Snow brings to life a historical event that occurred every day of the year and gives us a different and unexpected view of the past. From one captivating episode to another, time transforms into a vibrant, deeply human History of the world.

In 1910, kissing was banned at train stations in France, under the notion that lovers, relatives, and friends bidding farewell were causing delays in schedules. In 1982, kisses "for pleasure" were banned in Iran, while in 1992, students at Qingdao Binhai University in China were prohibited from any display of affection – they couldn't even hold hands or share headphones for music.

Even more recently, in 2003, much to the horror of citizens, an attempt was made in Moscow to vote on a law that would ban kissing in public spaces for all social classes. The aim was to enhance the level of public morality. The residents of Moscow preemptively defied the ban by kissing strangers on the street, and eventually, the proposed law was abandoned.

Fortunately, these backward laws are exceptions. Since 1562, kissing in public has been widely accepted and even encouraged, with July 6 being World Kiss Day – a way to openly celebrate the expression of affection between people.

Afghanistan is the place where empires die – or at least get defeated. On this day in 1842, Britain, a global superpower, experienced humiliation as its soldiers were slaughtered by Afghan tribal warriors. Britain had invaded Afghanistan to prevent the Russians from using it as a base from which they could threaten India. Capturing it was the easy part. When the British reached Kabul, the locals' resentment turned into open rebellion in late 1841. The British decided to retreat to Jalalabad, about 160 kilometers away, crossing snow-covered mountains in the heart of winter.
