A few years ago - it doesn't matter exactly how many - having little or no money in my pocket and nothing particular to interest me on land, I thought I would travel a bit at sea and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself grimacing; when in my soul it is a wet November, drizzling; when I find myself stopping involuntarily in front of coffin warehouses and becoming the tail of every funeral I meet; and especially when my hypochondria dominates me so much that a strong moral imperative is needed to prevent me from deliberately going out in the street and systematically hurling down the hats of the world - then I consider that the time has come to embark, as soon as I can. It is my own substitute for the pistol and the bullet. With a philosophical gesture of great grandeur, Cato threw himself on his sword; I quietly take the ship. There is nothing surprising about this. If they knew it, it would suffice; almost all men, in their own way, sooner or later, would harbor more or less the same feelings as I do towards the ocean.
