This manual presents issues related to both historical linguistic research and theory as well as synchronic linguistics. After a brief presentation of the history of the Greek language, emphasis is placed on certain topics that are not common in the literature, such as linguistic and grammatical research from antiquity to the 18th century, the evolution from comparative grammar to historical-comparative linguistics, language kinship and classification, and etymology. In the section on synchronic linguistics, emphasis is placed on structure, reference is made to other linguistic schools that investigate complex linguistic phenomena from different perspectives, and the linguistic levels of phonetics, phonology, and morphology are extensively presented.
The conclusion that we hope the reader of this book will reach is that the research of the complex phenomenon of "language" is not only extremely interesting and useful from all perspectives but also arduous, as it must be conducted with care, using appropriate methods and in accordance with the principles imposed by linguistic ethics.
