The established lack of written work regarding the vocabulary that arises from the linguistic contact between the Greek and Turkish languages in Cyprus created the need for the writing of this dictionary. This dictionary constitutes the first attempt to identify and present, with etymological observations, the common words of the Greek Cypriot (G/C) and Turkish Cypriot (T/C) dialects, which have the same or similar meaning in both communities.
Undoubtedly, the common presence and the intertwined lives of Christians (Greek Cypriots) and Muslims (Turkish Cypriots) during the Ottoman period (1571-1878) on the island led to the interpenetration of various cultural elements, despite the national and religious differences of the two communities. A product of this interpenetration is the intense and complex linguistic activity, mainly concerning lexical borrowings, an activity that continues even after 1878 and presents particular interest.
