This empirical research effort aims to examine the relationship between school performance and the factor of social origin in a sample of secondary school students from both public and private institutions.
Initially, an overview of the topic is attempted with the assistance of international sociological approaches and Greek empirical research, presenting the characteristics of private education in Greece. Subsequently, an empirical investigation is conducted using a questionnaire developed based on these theoretical approaches.
Generally, the better school performance displayed by private secondary school students, according to the research, is largely determined by the significant role played by the family background of the students, as shaped by the social and educational level of their parents. The school, through the mechanisms it employs, reproduces social inequality within its framework and accordingly shapes the educational trajectory of the students.
