Packed with power to handle the environments of small and medium-sized business NAS and increased workloads for SOHO customers, the WD Red Plus is ideal for archiving and sharing, as well as rebuilding RAID arrays in systems using ZFS and other file systems.

Built and tested for NAS systems with up to 8 bays, these drives offer you the flexibility, versatility, and confidence to store and share your valuable files at home and work.

For small or medium businesses

Stream, back up, share, and organize your digital content with a NAS and WD Red Plus drives designed to effortlessly share content with devices in your home or business.

NASware technology increases the compatibility of your drives with your existing network and devices. For larger businesses with up to 24 bays, rely on WD Red™ Pro drives that deliver exceptional performance.

Built for optimal NAS compatibility

WD Red Plus drives with NASware technology take the guesswork out of choosing a drive. Optimized for NAS systems, our unique algorithm balances performance and reliability in NAS and RAID environments.

Simply put, a WD Red Plus drive is one of the most compatible drives available for NAS enclosures. But don't just take our word for it. WD Red™ Plus drives are the result of extensive NAS technology partner engagement and compatibility testing.

WD Red Pro for large businesses

If you are looking for heavy-duty performance for NAS, WD Red Pro NAS hard drives provide exceptional performance for medium and large business customers with extreme demands.

For NAS environments with 9 to 24 bays, WD Red Pro units deliver uncompromising performance and unwavering confidence backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

3D Active Balance Plus

The improved dual-stage balance control technology significantly enhances the overall performance and reliability of the motor.

Hard drives that are not properly balanced can cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system, reduce the lifespan of the hard drive, and degrade performance over time.

24/7 Environment

Given that the NAS system is always operational, a reliable drive is essential. With an MTBF of up to 1 million hours, the WD Red Plus drive is designed to handle 24x7 environments.

Desktop Drives vs. WD Red Plus

Do the right thing for your NAS and choose the drive that is specifically built for NAS with a range of features that help maintain your data and keep optimal performance. Consider the following when choosing a hard drive for your NAS:

  • Compatibility: 3.5" HDDs have been specifically tested for compatibility with NAS systems for optimal performance.
  • Reliability: The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is hot, and desktop drives are typically not designed and tested under these conditions, unlike WD Red Plus drives.
  • Error recovery controls: WD Red Plus NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures in the NAS system.
  • Noise and vibration protection: Desktop drives designed to operate alone usually offer little to no protection from the noise and vibration present in a multi-drive system. WD Red Plus drives are designed to thrive in multi-bay NAS system environments.

I am using a pair on Synology NAS. The video transmission speed over wifi is not satisfactory, but it probably has nothing to do with the disk.

...and the next disk will be WD RED.
I have 7 WD30EFRX disks and not one has had a failure.
The oldest one "wears" 80.00A80 firmware, has 1694 days or 40656 hours of operation, 4800 start/stop cycles, and 0 reallocated sectors.
The newest one "wears" 82.00A82 firmware, has 579 days or 13910 hours of operation, 4050 start/stop cycles, and 0 reallocated sectors.
They all work in non-RAID mode, in an air-cooled desktop PC that restarts every 4-5 months and shuts down during summers when the ambient temperature exceeds 39 Celsius.
However, they also have performance issues depending on the production LOT.
For example, the oldest one has 115MB/s sustained read while the newest one is limited to 110MB/s and another one doesn't exceed 95MB/s.
    Some users report problems.
I just wanted to note some possible causes of problems:
    A. Faulty LOT,
    B. Poor transportation conditions in the supply chain,
    C. Intense temperature fluctuations during operation,
    D. High humidity,
    E. Vibrations during use

Use on Synology NAS with light usage (primarily for backups) for less than 4 years. It produces bad sectors after 5000 hours of operation. This particular NAS also has 2 WD GREEN drives with triple the operating hours that work without any problems (making you wonder if the extra cost of 10-15% for red is worth it). For NAS-level hardware and given the light usage, I believe their reliability should have been much better. I also have a second one that was purchased together, and I will report back when and if they "spit them out". I agree with the speed and temperature (fast and doesn't get hot)

I bought 2 of these disks in 2015, and as soon as the 3-year warranty expired, they started producing a lot of errors - bad sectors on my Synology NAS, and both of them need to be replaced. So, in terms of reliability, I think they could have been better. Also, they are quite slow disks, but they don't heat up.

Four such disks operate 24/7 inside a Synology NAS for over 3 years (again, 24/7) without any issues. Temperatures are perfect, 27-28 degrees in winter and a maximum of 30 in summer. Speed is excellent, consistently at 112 MB/sec, which is the upper limit of Gigabit Ethernet connection. On a PC, I measured around 145 MB/s.

Regarding their speed inside a NAS, it should be noted that 30/40 MB/s are typical speeds in cheap NAS, and that's still good. If you want satisfactory speeds to/from a NAS, unfortunately, you have to spend (on Synology/QNAP, etc.)

Also, as for using it as a desktop disk, it works flawlessly. In fact, because it's 5400rpm, it produces no noise at all (it's by far the quietest disk I've used, even compared to the Blue, which is also 5400rpm). And you gain a small price difference for a longer MTBF of 1,000,000 hours (compared to 300,000 for Blue) and a 3-year warranty (compared to 2 years for Blue). For me, it's a choice with closed eyes for most uses.

  • I am using a pair on Synology NAS. The video transmission speed over wifi is not satisfactory, but it probably has nothing to do with the disk.

  • ...and the next disk will be WD RED.

  • Use on Synology NAS with light usage (primarily for backups) for less than 4 years.

  • I bought 2 of these disks in 2015, and as soon as the 3-year warranty expired, they started producing a lot of errors - bad sectors on my Synology NAS, and both of them need to be replaced. So, in terms of reliability, I think they could have been better. Also, they are quite slow disks, but they don't heat up.
