The following pages attempt a "systematic" approach to the large subject of the unity of the Church. The unity of the Church is not an organizational or intellectual achievement, but primarily an existential reality, a way of being that constitutes the Church. Unity is identified with the truth of the Church, that is, with what the Church is as an existential possibility and a gift of life.
However, this "systematic" approach to the unity of the Church cannot ignore the historical manifestations or the historical trials of ecclesial unity. Outside of the specific historical reality, the connection of unity with the truth of the Church risks becoming an abstract intellectual conception, irrelevant to the lives of people.
At the same time, however, the connection of the truth of the Church with its historical manifestation and realization or the failure of ecclesial unity faces the "precision" of historical phenomenology. By the criteria of historical phenomenology, the unity of the Church and its historical trials are a phenomenon of social and cultural differentiations, and not primarily an existential achievement or existential failure of people.
Not that social and cultural differentiations are unrelated to the existential adventure of human beings. But the relationship between these two factors is certainly one of the sharpest problems of discerning the boundaries between an arbitrary interpretation of history and the critical – abstract view of History that transcends the conventional "objectivity" of the phenomenology of symptoms.
