Description

My reader, here do not expect to read the story of Turkish coffee. The traditions surrounding the discovery of Turkish coffee, the struggles for its free prevalence, and its evolution to modern European varieties - all these, in any case - are duly recorded, in golden letters, in the relevant manuals and encyclopedias.

In this article, I wish to talk about Turkish coffee as we know it here in Greece. I will get straight to the point. The Turks, who should be considered the fathers of the modern Greeks, among other goods and evils they bequeathed to us, is also coffee; the famous Turkish coffee.

At the beginning, the words coffee / coffeehouse / coffee vendor / tammy / gentek / cezve / cup / dalva / roaster / kaimaki / chess / addict, etc. - almost all of Turkish origin. The word coffee [rather a blend of the French cafe, the Italian caffe, and the modern Greek kave].

For the preparation of coffee, earlier generations used the verb 'to roast', while today it is customary to use the verb 'to make'. 'He roasted coffee', writes Papadiamantis, in his story 'The Symptoms' (1903).
