Every time we read or talk to someone, the experience causes organic changes in our brain. Within seconds, new circuits form, memories that can forever change the way we see the world.

I find this idea so important that for the past three years it has been difficult for me to be interested in anything else. How does memory leave its mark, allowing us to carry the past in our minds?

Only in recent years have scientists begun to work on some theories that actually contribute to explaining this mental phenomenon. Breaking down a part of the walls that have long divided various scientific fields, psychologists, biologists, physicists, and philosophers are joining their efforts in order to answer some of the great questions of human existence: How do we know what we know? How do we create the mental maps - the structures of memories - that serve as guides in the world we live in?
