AN ALTERNATIVE HISTORY OF THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL CENTURY

The 20th century should be understandable to us. It is the period we know best, an epic geopolitical narrative that spans from World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Yet this story does not seem to lead us to the world we find ourselves in now.

With John Higgs as our guide, we step off the beaten path of historiography and wander through some of the most obscure trails of the 20th century. We explore known and unknown aspects of the era, traveling alongside some of the most radical artists and scientists, along with brilliant and eccentric personalities of the time.

Together with them, we discover that great innovations, such as the theory of relativity, cubism, quantum mechanics, postmodernism, and the mathematics of chaos, are not abstract, incomprehensible concepts, but signposts that guide us through the world we live in today.

WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT THE BOOK

An innovative book that encourages the reader to think radically. DAILY MAIL

An intelligent narrative that will stimulate your thinking. GUARDIAN

John Higgs addresses the topics he tackles with a dynamic, refreshing, non-academic approach while possessing the unique ability to effectively explain the interconnection of complex ideas. GOODREADS

An engaging, readable, coherent map of the crucial changes that within a hundred shocking and terrible years reshaped the human psyche and the human world… An enlightening book that teaches us exactly where we were and where we find ourselves today. I highly recommend it. ALAN MOORE, AUTHOR

Read an excerpt

As we live having a permanent, stable point of the ground beneath our feet, we believe that there is a continuous, universal time that passes without being directly felt. Let us imagine the people who go daily to their work crossing the Westminster Bridge in London, with the Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben clock above them. The clock is high up, above the suited passersby below it, and shows the passage of time obeying an absolute regularity, unaffected by the lives of the people beneath. We sense that the same must happen with time. It is beyond our control and unaffected by what we do. However, Einstein realized that this was not true. Time, like space, varies depending on the conditions.
