The Comrades is a study of the endless and stubborn disharmony between the two sexes. A young painter and his wife agree that marriage is a partnership based on mutual benefits.
However, the idea does not work out well: the wife reaps all the rewards of the partnership, dominating her husband's helpless will, mocking him, and cheating on him without any reservations. In the end, the young painter drives his wife away and prepares to enter a new partnership, less binding, with another woman.
This work is a piece of pure pessimism – particularly emphasized in the expressions of the cynically sarcastic Dr. Estermark, who, similar to a character in some of René Maizeroy's stories, adds up the value of life and concludes it to be nothing but a farce: "Farce! Farce! Newlyweds, love, Naples, joy of life, antiquities, modern thought and art, liberalism, conservatism, ideals, reality, nature-worship, everything is a farce!".
