Distinct book! Easy to read even though it's long, it keeps the interest unchanged. Great plot twists. Well-structured.

Description & Specifications

Erane: to fall in love, to love. 766 AD. Lygini and Hyacinthus are dragged together with a multitude of monks to the Hippodrome, publicly shamed, and forcibly married. Both hide tightly sealed secrets that will mark their lives and largely determine them during their odyssey.

Rhodanos, angel-faced, daring, a seeker of pleasures but with terrible secrets binding him tightly, is also devoted to what he considers duty. Around these three heroes and the mystery of the Sacred Sticharion, which could overthrow emperors and decades of politics, the narrative unfolds during the second half of the 8th century against the backdrop of the Iconoclasm and daily life in Constantinople, Athens, and Thrace.

In a unique era, unknown and mythical. They are accompanied by several secondary characters, such as the wicked Hermes, the cultivated slave Kitin, Arkadios who was raised in the forest by a bear, the actress Gorgonía, the patrician Fokas with his group of Lions, the black eunuch Aran, and others.

The protagonists go to extremes, fall passionately in love, live carefree, surrender to life and are given to it, are humiliated, crushed, recover, fall back into the mire, collapse, dedicate themselves to God or renounce Him, become victims of their own image or are led to prayer through the vision of the soul.

They have to confront slanders, wars, intrigues, deadly enemies, a love-massacre, nightmares and dreams, and above all, their very own selves.

Read an excerpt

The smell of manure, smoke, and garbage lingered in the air. A flock of birds flew over the Keratsio Gulf, faintly veiling Chrysoupoli and Chalkidona, while an indistinct roar of shouts came from the Hippodrome. With harsh orders, whippings, and pushes, the guards forced the monks to leave the stables of the Venetians, where they had been imprisoned for two or three days and nights. Pained cries, moans, curses, and blasphemies were heard, while a cloud of dust was gilded by the morning sun, surrounding the clergymen. It seemed like a shapeless and undecided halo, before it was divided and encircled the heads of the chosen ones to be proclaimed saints and holy men. The same brutality pushed another group, female this time, from the stables of the Greens, towards the earthen courtyard with the stone trough in the middle and the stone-built enclosure. Nuns with frightened eyes, without scarves covering their heads and with short haircuts, with deep cuts down to the white of their skin, all uneven in size.
