During the years of occupation, Jean Anouilh suddenly turns to ancient Greek myths. Eight of his works had already been staged in Paris, with themes that are dark or rosy, but all taken from the modern world.

Like the ancient myth of Orpheus, Anouilh's Eurydice is the tragedy of Love and Death. However, the Eurydice of the French playwright is not a Dryad Nymph, but an actress in a sad 'troupe'.

In any case, in none of his other works does Anouilh appear as lyrical, poetically desperate, as in Eurydice. This romantic depth and despair soften the darkness of the image and elicit sympathy for the hopeless lovers of death.
