Description

As You Want Me (1929-1930) belongs to the last period of Pirandello. It is yet another "grotesque" drama of personality. Its heroine is characteristically named "The Unknown"; a woman with a vague past, vague memory, and vague existence, a dancer in a cabaret of interwar (1920s) Berlin, where wealth and hunger, unemployment and orgies, violence and prostitution were hysterically rampant. The Unknown cohabits with the debauched writer Zalter and his strange daughter ‒ a triangular bond as odd as it is fervent. However, an Italian photographer, Boffi, believes he recognizes in The Unknown's face the wife of his friend Bruno Pieri ‒ who, ten years earlier, as a young bride, had been kidnapped by the occupying forces, and since then her husband has been searching for her everywhere.

♦ The Revenge of a man whose life has ended is the one-act play A Fool (1922). Literally, here: with the despair of biological death, with the bitterness of the life that young Luca Fazio did not get to live. Revenge for the cruelty of people towards the pain and death of others, revenge for the contempt of the grandiose towards the humility and foolishness of the humble. And, at the same time, sarcasm for the vanity, passions, and cynicism of the powerful, which lead to crime. On the threshold of death, Luca avenges all the insignificant ones whom the powerful see only as instruments of their goals. And he has the sardonic satisfaction that tomorrow's corpse will bear the ‒ written! ‒ certificate that truly the fool is not he, ravaged by disease and poverty, but the pompous leader who, driven by political passion, sought to kill his opponent.
