White Horses is the title that this masterful drama by Ibsen was first published under. In later editions, the title Rosmersholm was adopted.
The tower of Rosmer, “Rosmersholm,” carries the darkness and weight of a conservative family that controls everything. A pastor, the last descendant of the Rosmers who has broken away from the Church, and his lost wife.
A demonic woman who stays with him cares for him and inspires him to think and live freely. The old clashes with the new. A love is born, a passion remains unfulfilled, and a death is unresolved.
The scene unfolds in Rosmersholm, an old manor house, on the outskirts of a small town in the fjords of western Norway.
