Description

Description

The 37 texts by 27 authors that make up this volume are selected from publications spanning 173 years; except for the first one, they are reissued here in chronological order of their first printed appearance or original composition.

The (whole or fragmentary) republications presented here showcase only some of the opinions and perspectives regarding the generally consistent, and often intense, engagement of several Greek and foreign scholars with Solomos, his (overall) literary output, or specific works and themes.

As allowed by the volume's size specifications, the volume aims to reveal the range of thematic, formal, interpretive, poetic, literary, comparative, and editorial attitudes and reflections of the criticism surrounding the work of an esteemed European writer of the 19th century, who is also the first major poet of modern Greek literature.

The selected texts are not always proposed as the best or most interesting of each scholar’s work but are juxtaposed to present, based on the assessments and preferences of the editor, characteristic features or aspects of Solomos' well-known production, as well as some of the concerns of critical and literary research.

Together with the biographical article that precedes it and the annotated selection of bibliography at the end of the volume, it is hoped that these will make the Introduction to the poetry of Solomos a reading guide for the entirety of Solomos' creations.
