A natural disaster, such as an earthquake or a flood, which is sometimes followed by a second disaster, such as a fire or an epidemic, constitutes an unpredictable event that impacts the economy or demographics of a society and often the individual's relationship with the state or religious authorities.

Nevertheless, the role of natural disasters in historical developments is dubious. The twenty studies included in this volume address the methodology for studying natural disasters and the aforementioned issues.
