"The 'Jump of Death' is a reissue -in its 5th edition- of Giorgos Skourti's book 'The Novel of a Murder', which, although it was highly praised by critics and the author's 'faithful' readers, remains almost unknown to the majority of readers of modern Greek literature.
It is a completely paradoxical story that the author read in the 'small print' of Newsweek while traveling by plane from New York to Chicago. A young man went to the police and declared that he was definitely going to kill a girl. When the police officer asked him, 'Why are you going to kill her?', he replied, 'I don't know, but I will kill her.'
The author kept the news and later wrote the novel, which does not pertain to a specific country, as today all societies are more or less the same. On one side, there is this 'little man' and on the other, the oppressive mechanisms of power that shape not only his consciousness but also his superego.
What has happened then both within the 'abyss of the hero's soul' in the novel, and in the reality of the case, which involves a murder and a great love? With violence, oppression, isolation, loneliness, deprivation, but also with the tendency for the individual to 'exit' from these inhumane social conditions? The thoughtful reader will surely find the answer. Not only for the hero's 'jump of death' but also for his own -different yet inevitable- one.
