Gemma iris bulbs are planted in autumn and bloom in spring. They grow best in fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil and a spot with plenty of sunlight.
They can be planted in a pot with all-purpose potting mix on a south- or west-facing balcony. Plant them 3–5 cm deep in colder regions or 5–10 cm deep in warmer regions, with 20–30 cm between bulbs. From sprouting until flowering begins, water regularly, about 1–2 times a week, without allowing the soil to become overly wet. Add fertiliser at planting time and again in early spring, avoiding nitrogen-based fertilisers.
