Pausanias was born around 110 AD in Magnesia on the Hermus, in Asia Minor, and died in 180. Having possibly a permanent position at the library of Pergamon and family property, he traveled extensively in Greece, Egypt, Syria, Rome, and elsewhere from a young age.
His work, Descriptions of Greece, offers a wealth of archaeological material and became a source of abundant information for his later readers on mythology, political history, and folk culture, as well as a guide for archaeological excavations in ancient topography during the digs in many areas of Greece.
