How much of an apple is the red you see? In Hues and Cues, players are challenged to describe a specific shade among 480 squares using only one-word or two-syllable clues. The game is based on the subjectivity of vision: what you consider brown, someone else might perceive as dark orange or terracotta. It’s a test of how well you can sync with the way your friends see the world of colors, as you try to guess the exact coordinate on a massive color map.
What shade do you think of when you hear the word "apple"? Hues and Cues is a lively game of colorful communication, where players are challenged to create connections between words and colors. Using only one or two words, they must describe a shade from a set of 480 that are on the board. The closer the answer, the more points it gives. Everything you need to know to play
In each round, one player takes on the role of the Describer and secretly selects a specific shade from their card. Their goal is to guide the other players to place their pawns as close as possible to the correct square on the board.
The process is divided into two clue phases. In the first phase, the Describer gives a clue consisting of a single word (e.g. sky). Players take turns placing their pawns where they believe the corresponding color is located. Then, the Describer gives a second clue consisting of two words (e.g. clear sky) and players place a second pawn to correct or confirm their choice.
Scoring is based on proximity to the correct square. If your pawn is exactly on the correct color, you get 3 points. If it is in the area of the neighboring squares, you get 2 or 1 point respectively. The Describer also earns points for each pawn that is in their color area. The winner is the one who collects the most points after everyone has played as the Describer.
