This study provides an overview of the morphological richness of the folk theater of the Balkan Peninsula, focusing on the Greek phenomena, and ranks the material in a sequential order, starting from simple precursor phenomena and culminating in complex forms of advanced folk theater.

It is found that the Greek forms of traditional folk theater (in contrast to modern folk theater, which is not the subject of this study) seamlessly integrate into a broader cultural space, extending from the outskirts of Vienna to the depths of Asia Minor.

A comparative methodology is applied, where similar phenomena are examined independently of country and language. In this way, the cultural stratification of the regions of the Balkans becomes vividly apparent, as they share many common elements, at least in the field of folk theater.
