Its antiseptic properties make it useful as a mouthwash for treating oral problems such as inflammation of the mouth and throat. It can also be used externally for infected scrapes and wounds. The infusion is used for cough and whooping cough. Headaches, especially those due to tension, are relieved with a drink of oregano or by rubbing the temples with the oil. The oil is also used for massages in areas of muscle pain and rheumatic pain. A lotion can also be prepared to relieve stings and bites.
The herb acts as a stimulant, diaphoretic, antiseptic, expectorant, emmenagogue, and anti-inflammatory. Scientific research has found antibiotic properties in oregano (especially in the essential oil), categorizing it among antioxidant plants. Furthermore, it has been shown that Cretan oregano contains a higher amount of essential oil compared to that of the plant found in other parts of our country. It is an herb with wide use in both traditional remedies and culinary practices. As a stimulant diaphoretic, it is used in the treatment of colds and flu.
Usage: For internal use, it is prepared as an infusion. We pour a cup of boiling water over a teaspoon of dried herb. We let it steep covered for 10 minutes, strain, and drink up to three times a day. For mouth rinses, we pour half a liter of boiling water over two tablespoons of dried herb and let it steep covered for 10 minutes. We can use the same liquid for gargling if we heat it again. Gargling can be done 2 to 3 times a day, for 5-10 minutes each time. In tincture form, the dose should not exceed 1-2 ml of tincture, three to four times a day.
