Description

In this book, David Burns shares with you some scientifically proven methods to cope with your depression and start "feeling good." The techniques are based on a new form of therapy known as cognitive therapy.

In fact, cognitive therapy is one of the first forms of psychotherapy, which has been shown in clinical research studies to be more effective than antidepressant medication in treating major and minor depression.

Although antidepressants are often very helpful, we now have an effective approach that has helped many people overcome their emotional disorders without being obliged to take medication. And even if you are already taking medication, the self-help techniques described in this book can expedite the improvement of your condition.

  • Psychotherapy—cognitive therapy in particular—found its forefather in Epictetus. It proclaims, as he did, that it is not things themselves that disturb people, but the ideas they have about things. Since all human concepts are projections of the human mind, we do not see reality—we perceive it... How is a person who suffers in their relationship with the world and with themselves treated? By changing the way they perceive and interpret reality and what happens to them. This is the recipe of the Handbook.

However, the book does not provide many tools for caregivers of people with depression. It is more for those who want to help themselves. It also includes a depression rating questionnaire.

I feel lucky to have found this book in my hands! I keep it as a talisman on my nightstand and refer to it whenever I need to. Regardless of the title, I believe that everyone can read it because it deals with thoughts and concerns that everyone experiences daily, regardless of depression.

The book is simply unique. It introduces us to the technique of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in a simple and understandable way, analyzing it step by step with many examples. Cognitive Therapy is perhaps (along with Synthetic) the most effective model of self-awareness.
