Description

Description

The book "Introduction to Linguistics" serves as a general introduction to the science of language, written especially for students and readers without specialized knowledge or training in this field.

Initially, some general views about the nature of language and the goals, methods, and fundamental principles of linguistics are presented. Then, John Lyons separately presents each individual area: the sounds of language, grammar, semantics, language change, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, as well as the relationship that connects language and culture.

In any case, the presentation is linked to the most significant contemporary works and the main currents, while particularly highlighting those views that are considered, and most likely will continue to be considered, foundational.

The author also constantly emphasizes the cultural context of language, at least as much as the biological one, and shows how the interests of the linguist are fruitfully connected with the interests of traditional humanities and social sciences.
