Vegemite is one of my favorite spreads. I grew up with it since I was born and raised in Melbourne! The right way to eat it is on toasted bread with a little animal butter and very little Vegemite. It’s a product that if you eat it the right way, you will love it, but if you eat it the wrong way, you will hate it! One observation I will make here is that in a very well-known grocery store in Thessaloniki, they sell it for €7.40 for the same grams, and here you find it almost 10 times more!!!!

To properly enjoy Vegemite, you need to know how to eat it, the right proportions to spread on buttered slices of toast, and if you want, slices of cheese

I decided to try Vegemite instead of Marmite. Although it's early, I think I liked it more. I prefer the paste-like texture it has and the fact that it's not as salty. It gives me a special umami flavor. Marmite won't be missing from the house, but Vegemite has found a permanent place. I eat it on warm toasted bread with butter and a small amount, and it's perfect. Unfortunately, the price is a bit steep, but it's normal when you consider that it comes from Australia, and in the end, the jar lasts a long time.

  • Strong taste reminiscent of Marmite, only if you like the taste otherwise it will prevail as a taste in whatever you put it in, I put it in soups

  • Hard to find in Greece. But well worth it when you do.
My Greek daughter absolutely loves it. The best recipe I’ve found is butter must be spread while the slice of toast is hot , liberal amount of Vegemite needs to be spread then place a slice of cheddar or Gouda cheese on top.

A trademark of Australia and perhaps its cultural asset, it is even mentioned in Men at Work's Down Under (~I said, "Do you speak my language?" // He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich~). A very distinctive taste that you can't exactly describe, it gives me the sensation of a flavor between Roquefort, roasted meat with a salty and slightly bitter but tasty aftertaste reminiscent of beer (understandable, due to the barley in the product), the so-called "umami." It definitely falls into the category of products you either love or hate, or/and get used to. I tried it the classic way they suggest everywhere, a minimal amount on bread with butter, but I prefer it combined with cheese + omelette + tomato on bread, I felt it really enhanced the sandwich. On its website, there are many recipes and combinations with doughs or pasta. If you are foodies and like to try "weird" things or love Australia, give it a try and give it several chances!
