Description

THE FUTURE HAS NOT HAPPENED YET. THE IDEA THAT OUR CULTURE IS DOOMED HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN. IT IS A STORY THAT WE TELL OURSELVES. During the 1980s, we abandoned the future. Now all we see ahead of us is economic collapse, environmental destruction, and the Zombie Apocalypse. But what if we are wrong? What if there is still a future for us?

From the space adventure of Star Trek to artificial intelligence, to universal basic income and the influence of social networks, as well as from the perspectives of the boomer generation to those of millennials and Generation Z, John Higgs takes us on a journey beyond technological madness and headlines to discover why we should not trust the predictions of science fiction, why nature is not as unprotected as we think, and why the drive that compels us to create will never be automated.

Along the way, he is accompanied by people he meets during his wanderings through the streets of his city, Brighton, and their conversations help us better understand what awaits us and how we can create a better future.

WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT THE BOOK

Intelligent, powerful, and beautifully written with humor, humanity, and a mental honesty that is rarely found these days, The Future Begins Here and Now is the best book I have read this year. An antidote to the panic and cynicism that surrounds us and a tribute to the future. A book you must read. Lord Victor Adebowale

Dive into the pages of this book and enter the new decade informed and protected by its remarkable conclusions. I highly recommend it. Mike Scott, The Waterboys

According to this criterion, intelligence is the art of behaving like a human. Humans were the only beings in the universe capable of intelligent behavior, such as performing mathematical calculations, playing chess, tying shoelaces, recognizing Uncle Bob, kicking a soccer ball, and so on. Nevertheless, even if computers and robots are now able to do these things in soccer, mathematics, chess, recognizing Uncle Bob, and tying shoelaces, they are always considered to be non-intelligent. Once machines are able to perform tasks that previously only intelligent human beings could do, we stop considering these tasks as requiring artificial intelligence and regard them simply as boring, mundane chores that we can leave to non-intelligent machines. For example, we do not consider facial recognition on our phones as artificial intelligence, even though it is exactly that. Therefore, a definition of artificial intelligence is the things that computers still cannot do. Artificial intelligence is like the end of the rainbow: something that constantly recedes, that you can never quite reach.
