Description & Specifications

The COURSES OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY include the material taught in the 2nd and 3rd semesters of the Pharmacy Department at AUTH, and for this reason, it is published as PART ONE and PART TWO.

The SECOND PART completes the study of the remaining basic classes of compounds in Organic Chemistry, initially the acyclic compounds (Carbonyl compounds, Carboxylic Acids and their derivatives, Nitrogenous, Sulfurous, and Organosilicon compounds), followed by the aromatic compounds (Aromaticity, Aromatic Hydrocarbons and their substituted derivatives, corresponding to the aforementioned acyclic compounds), and provides information on the chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds (Nomenclature, simple, selected Oxygenated, Nitrogenous, Sulfurous heterocyclic systems, monocyclic and bicyclic).

Emphasis is placed on the nomenclature of the various classes and compounds and the groups that characterize them, on the critical approach to their properties and methods of preparation, and the spectroscopic properties that contribute to their characterization and identification are highlighted. Relationships between the various classes of compounds are emphasized, and with selected exercises accompanied by solutions - answers and critiques, a deeper understanding of the material of the various Chapters is sought, so that the prediction of properties of unknown compounds not included in the book's material is feasible.

Finally, various classes of natural products, with significant biological interest, such as Lipids, Amino Acids, Peptides, Proteins, Carbohydrates, and Isoprenoid compounds are studied, and elements from the chemistry of Synthetic Polymers are mentioned.

The indexes systematically record and reference compounds, terms, and concepts, indicating where and how many times they are mentioned, so that their use enables easy and complete relevant information for interested parties. Given the limited scope and selection of content in this book, it is natural for there to be omissions. Any suggestions related to omissions and errors, or regarding the structure of the material, will be welcome.
