The ambition of this book is to provide a concise yet comprehensive overview of medieval Europe and to address the complexity and richness of the subject.
As a characteristic of this long historical period, the evolutionary continuity is highlighted, which is evident even in times of crisis and reorganization that conventionally separate the history of the West into successive phases: specifically, the eras between the late Roman world and the "Europe of the tribes" of the 6th and 7th centuries, as well as between the late Middle Ages and the 16th century.
No particular emphasis is given to any region. Although France and England dominate the overall picture, Germany, Italy, and Spain are also presented in detail, along with extensive sections on Byzantium and Islam, the strong neighbors that exerted such significant influence on medieval Western Europe.
