EDID is a communication protocol used by monitors to transmit information about their capabilities to a video source (e.g., video player) so that the latter can accordingly adjust its video output. Some video players, if they see from the EDID that the specific monitor supports more advanced features than those of the video, simply do not transmit it at all—even though it could be displayed on the monitor at lower quality. This is where the EDID emulator comes into play, which has the ability to first connect to a monitor with advanced features, copy its EDID, and then connect between the video player and an older technology monitor, 'tricking' the player by transmitting the EDID of the advanced monitor so that the video is transmitted.
This particular emulator did the job but had the major disadvantage that it would 'forget' the EDID it had copied after a short time. Thus, it would send its default settings to the player and the video would not be transmitted. Therefore, the copying process had to be repeated from the beginning each time, which made it useless. I could not determine under what conditions it lost the copied EDID; it was not due to being without power if the TV was unplugged or in standby mode. I contacted the store from which I bought it and the technician I spoke to did not even know what this device did and called it a 'converter'—and insisted on it. Maybe more expensive emulators behave better, but for me it is not worth it.
