The last novel by Tolstoy, Resurrection, is based on true events. It is the story of the prostitute Katyusha Maslova, who is wrongly accused and convicted of murdering one of her clients.
Prince Dmitri Ivanovich Nekhlyudov - who, long ago, abandoned her and their illegitimate child - appears as a juror in court. When Maslova is sentenced to four years of hard labor in Siberia, the Prince, suffering from terrible guilt, follows her to her place of martyrdom.
A classic novel of conscience. In Resurrection, Tolstoy's intentions to condemn governmental violence, the injustice of human laws, the hypocrisy of the Church, and to invoke the biblical commandment "judge not, that ye be not judged," are clearly presented.
