Four stories, four shades of Dickian narrative. Hasten is sent to the future to find out what happened to cause the collapse of human civilization... The Earthlings have won the war against the Proxians, but something is wrong for Milt Biscle... Douglas Quaid passionately wants to go to Mars. The only solution is to implant the memory of a journey into his mind... When classic works are bound in gump leather, alterations to their content occur...
The only certainty among all the realities of the Dickian world is that reality itself is utterly subjective. According to many critics, the contradictions and "loose ends" that characterize the Dickian narrative are somehow a result of the central theme, the instability that characterizes the different levels of perception. It is this very instability that depicts a truth that does not appear in more conventional science fiction.
On the receiver's side, the reader of science fiction, Dick's important skill of using ordinary people within simple (at first glance) and easily readable stories serves as a counterbalance. Revolutionary ideas and techniques take a back seat or even further back, doing their work even if the reader does not perceive it—and this is the ultimate achievement for a writer.
