The two novellas, The Creature that Whispers in the Dark (1930), The Temple of Terror (1935), as well as the short story The Call from the Beyond (1935), which make up the content of this book, are also part of the creative period of H. P. Lovecraft.
In the first, the monstrous Great Old Ones and their attempts to invade Earth again are discussed. In the second, the wondrous Shining Table is introduced, a cult object originating from the mysterious planet Yog-Sothoth-Pluto, and is related to the worship of the god Nyarlathotep, a key figure in Cthulhu mythology. Meanwhile, in the third story, the chilling transfer of a man to another space-time and his terrifying transformation is described with spine-chilling effectiveness.
