Description

Greeks and Europeans of intellectual stature have praised our folk songs. We, the modern Greeks, must safeguard this national treasure. These diamonds of our people's poetry must not be lost in the chasm of forgetfulness; instead, they should be preserved and remain as a legacy in the national treasury. We must not allow the bulldozer and devastation of globalization to erase them.

This spirit is reflected in this particular book of folk songs. Most of them are well-known and sung throughout Greece. The book does not simply record the folk songs. Its originality lies in the detailed studies, the writings of notable intellectuals, the research, the analysis, and many other elements that highlight the importance of our folk songs.

The book has been favorably expressed by selected journalists and educators in their articles in the following newspapers: “Proinos Logos (Ioannina newspaper) 10-2-2010, 17-6-2010, 5-7-2013, 10-7-2013, Ipirotikón Méllon (Athens newspaper) – June 2010.” On June 30, 2013, the book was presented by the professor and then vice-rector of the University of Ioannina, Georgios Kapsalis, at the invitation of all cultural and intellectual associations of all the villages in the Dodoni valley. At the end of the event, Angelos Evangelou, a professor at the Medical School of the University of Ioannina, spoke briefly about the significance of folk songs.

The book consists of two large sections (Part A and Part B). Part A includes special studies on folk songs as well as related texts. Part B includes representative songs from all 14 categories of folk songs. Each category is preceded by a description and explanation of its content. Wherever possible, related photographs have been included in the book (The mother in folk songs, as well as in Historical and Klephtic songs).
