Description & Specifications

From the late 17th century, the gradual formation and development of a decorative painting system can be noticed, characterized by strong Baroque post-Renaissance features that alter the forms, patterns, composition, and overall character of the classical Turkish-Islamic tradition.

From the mid-18th century, the decorative system is dominated by Rococo patterns, adding even greater richness to the type of decoration now known as Turkish Baroque, which can be found in secular and religious buildings belonging not only to the dominant Turkish element but also to subordinate ethnicities, such as the Greeks, Jews, Bulgarians, etc.

It is very interesting that in the Greek Orthodox churches, this decorative painting was generally used to frame the illustrations that broadly followed Byzantine models.

Local Orthodox craftsmen would assimilate the new Turkish Baroque system and give a new dimension to this painting, thanks to their apprenticeship in Byzantine art.

Later, newer currents of Western art, such as Neoclassicism and Neobaroque, were adopted and partially assimilated by decorative painting in the Ottoman Empire and in the young states emerging during the 19th century in the Balkan Peninsula.

The book by Miltos Garidis traces the evolution of these transformations in painting that decorated buildings of the Ottoman Empire from 1700 to 1900 and the regions that broke away from it in the 19th century.

The varied material described and presented in the rich illustrations comes from Asia Minor and the Balkan Peninsula and from buildings belonging to all categories.

The evolution of artistic phenomena always occurs in relation to the historical developments in the society to which this art was directed, a fact that gives the book a multidimensional and highly interesting character.
