Description

He walked among us in Omonia, in the center of Athens, in the busiest part of the city. “Where God had brought me,” in the Polyclinical of Athens, amidst the pain from illness and death. Thirty-three years “like a day”! Unnoticed by the many. The Professor of Medicine, K. Alivizatos, said to him: “My priest, we didn’t see you, we didn’t recognize you. Wow, we’ve had you all these years and we don’t know you!”

From the inhospitable desert of Kafsokalivia, God sent him into the world, to His “lost sheep”, to us! He brought the light of Christ to the brothels − “our priest”. He even wanted to go and live with the hippies in Matala, without, of course, any sins. “What we read in the Synaxaria, in the Lives of the Saints and we remain astonished, we experienced, it was happening next to us.” His words sweet, deeply theological, poetic, like a novel. A constant surprise. We rejoice in his words!

His amazing gift, a unique case, the fruit of immense struggle. “The signs of his holy life are legacies for our entire generation”! We have been sent much light into the darkness where we live. “The light of his star has not yet reached us. We have not understood his words.” The fresh spiritual breeze of his has already begun to blow! Many people are waiting for Saint Porphyrios!

Saint Porphyrios the Kavsokalyvite (secular name Evangelos Bayraktaris) was born on Wednesday, February 7, 1906, in the village of Agios Ioannis, near Aliveri in Evia. The ancestors of Saint Porphyrios from his father's lineage came from the village of Metamorfosi in Souli. Five to six families of shepherds from Marousi, Attica, had established a settlement in Evia since 1470 called Kalostoumalo, in the area where his ancestors later relocated. Their houses were built small and low (humble houses), as much as the Turks allowed them. The old church at the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Korakion had a very low entrance to prevent the Turks from entering on their horses. The settlement was named Koutsoumalo (small flat area) after the end of hostilities with the Turks. With the arrival of the Souliotes, either through anagram or due to their different attire, it was renamed Koustoumalo ("different costume"). The Souliotes were called Bayraktaris. The name Bayraktaris means flag bearer, meaning the new inhabitants raised a bayraki, a flag.
