Hyssop acts as an antispasmodic, expectorant, diaphoretic, sedative, and carminative. It has an interesting range of applications, most of which are due to the antispasmodic action of the bitter substance it contains (hyssopin). It is used for cough, bronchitis, and chronic catarrh. Its diaphoretic properties make it beneficial for the common cold. It can also serve as a neurotonic in conditions of anxiety, hysteria, and mild epilepsy.
It can be combined for cough and bronchitis with:
- White Horehound
- Tusilago
For the common cold, it is combined with:
- Agrimony
- Elderflower
- Mint
It also combines well with:
- Thyme
- Eucalyptus
It is prepared as an infusion. Pour one cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb and let it steep for 10-15 minutes. The beverage can be consumed up to three times a day. If using the tincture, take 1-4 ml of tincture three times a day. The tincture can be combined with other expectorant herbs such as Licorice, Inula, and Dill. For bronchitis or chest colds, rubs can be made by dissolving 10 drops of Hyssop essential oil in 20 ml of almond oil.
