In 1821, not only is it the starting point of the nation-state, but it also leaves a legacy of heroic behavior models for the future. Over the two hundred years that separate us from then, the great event has become the idealized reading of the first history of the Greek state.
The pre-modern society we encounter in the early years of the Regeneration gradually transforms, thanks to the Diaspora, into a modern society. The path of transformation passes through the avenues of trade between the West and the East.
The significance of nationalism for political modernization is prominently displayed in the shaping of Greek society as it evolves from 1821 to 1831. During this decade, the pre-modern society, fragmented into families, factions, protection networks, and strong localism, acquires professional associations.
The prominent political figures on one hand and the armed groups (some bandits and the armed men of Roumeli) on the other contend for control of the emerging state. The local division will end with the selection of Ioannis Kapodistrias as the first Governor of Greece. Friends and enemies of the generally accepted leader of the Greeks will be divided on ideological grounds.
