Description

Patrick Leigh Fermor, the greatest travel writer of our time, at the age of 18, in 1933, instead of following the military career he was destined for, crosses the English Channel and sets off to walk across Europe: his destination is Constantinople. Driven by his insatiable curiosity about the world, he will accomplish this mythical feat, encountering trials and adventures along the way.

This book is the second part of the thrilling chronicle of Patrick Leigh Fermor's youthful journey and covers his route from Budapest to the Iron Gates of the Danube.

WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT THE BOOK

At every step, it becomes increasingly clear that his adventure can never be repeated: only this uniquely remarkable man at this pivotal moment could have experienced and recorded all that he saw. The events he lived through in Germany cast a faint light on the journey of this free spirit. New York Times

The young Fermor appears to have been as pleasant a traveling companion as the much older Fermor was a delightful storyteller. Houston Chronicle

Read an excerpt

Apart from the flames of the thousands of candles placed along the windowsills and flickering in the hands of the waiting crowd, there was not a single light in the city. The men were bareheaded, the women wore veils, and the glow from their cupped hands reversed the daylight's chiaroscuro, emphasizing the lines of the jaw and nostrils, carving bright half-moons beneath the eyebrows and leaving everything beyond these luminous masks drowned in darkness. A silent forest of candle flames moved through the city: one street followed another, and as soon as the vanguard of the procession came into view, everyone knelt, only to rise again a few seconds after it had passed.
