Description

Competition is about sharing the pie, which, however, expands with collaboration! The two authors, the first a professor at Harvard Business School and the second at Yale School of Management, creatively redefine the business game from the start. And for this, they certainly need an imaginative neologism: co-opetition.

In contrast, they assure us, to chess or poker, where you win by eliminating your opponent, in business, it is best to start thinking – those of us who haven’t done so already – that strengthening, in the long run, our position and the increase in our profits do not at all imply the annihilation of the competitor.

Set against the backdrop of game theory, the two young and vividly articulate experts guide us through the strategic games played by companies today, such as Intel, Nintendo, American Express, Nutrasweet, American Airlines, and others, paying increasing attention to the right dosage of competition and collaboration.

No, we are not, of course, in a "moral, angelically crafted world." The saying of Michael Corleone from The Godfather II suits it better: "Keep your friends close, but your enemies even closer"! However, with this advice, the value of the new business model, based on "other-centeredness," is confirmed.

Ultimately, the ambition of the authors of this innovative management manual (already translated into many foreign languages – a bestseller, beyond the USA, in Latin America, France, and Japan) is not only to "teach" how to play the business game but to show interested parties how one can change it to maximize profits.
