Description

Description

The journey with the Beagle was one of the most significant scientific and adventurous journeys ever undertaken, when the European man was still seeking his roots and struggling with the meager means of his time to identify and document the unknown exotic and hostile world around him.

A young promising naturalist, Charles Darwin, who 'loved geology excessively and generally all branches of natural history,' joined the crew of the small naval ship of the Royal Navy of England, Beagle, which would sail around the world, in the mid-19th century.

His restless spirit, his penetrating gaze, and his tireless character found an outlet and flourished in this great adventure, in this exciting journey to the edge of the earth.

For five years, from 1831 to 1836, the young naturalist traveled. Tierra del Fuego, Andes, Galapagos. Exotic words, mythical places. He stepped on them, got to know them, and in a unique way and with remarkable insight, recorded in his diary his observations on the plant and animal wealth of these distant places.

Thus, the journey with the Beagle, and particularly his visit to the Galapagos (In these... I owe the origin of all my ideas), would become the foundation upon which later, in his phase of maturity, Darwin would write his foundational scientific work, On the Origin of Species, a work that shook the scientific world of his time and beyond, a work that strikingly demonstrated the origin of man and his biological evolution on earth, and why not his possible evolution in the future.
